School subjects that should be replaced | Felix Tsai – Grade 8

Everybody has to go to school, however, not all of the subjects schools decide to teach will be used in the future. There are certain skills that everybody will need as adults, but despite the long hours students spend at school, they still refuse to teach students those skills.

Instead, schools insist on teaching students less-than-useful subjects, like history, which we will never use.

Get rid of: history

One of the impractical subjects students learn at school every day is history. Compared to other subjects students learn at school, history is rarely used in real life. Obviously, there are certain careers that require a history degree, like archivists or historians, however, it is less relevant to most jobs than other subjects. Also, some people argue that we can learn from bad choices other people made in the past, that is not true because everyone can see that history is full of repeated mistakes.

Add: problem-solving

Instead of history, schools should teach students how to problem-solve, which is the ability to identify and solve a problem effectively. This is an important skill in the workplace, and unlike history, it will be used by people with all kinds of jobs.

Get rid of: 3D printing

Another subject that shouldn’t be taught at school is 3D printing. A lot of people think that this subject is important because everything will be 3D printed in the future, but it won’t be used as much as people think. 3D printing will most likely be used for constructing large projects or making furniture, so normal people won’t need access to it.

Add: game development

Few people will grow up to become game developers but schools should still teach it because game development requires essential skills like programming, graphic design, and team building. Teaching game development can help students develop skills they will need later on.

Get rid of: anything religious

Schools should also get rid of religious subjects since not a lot of people believe in God (or gods or whatever) anymore, so most of what people learn in these classes never gets used, or even remembered.

Add: financial management

Instead of religion, schools should teach financial management. Pretty much everyone will eventually get a job, buy stuff, and have to pay their taxes, so it will be much more useful because it is something that no one can avoid.

At school, students spend hours sitting in a classroom, listening to teachers teach them subjects that should help them to get a job or earn money. Sometimes, however, that time goes to waste because of the stupid subjects that schools teach.

Certain less practical subjects, like history, 3D printing, and religious studies, should be replaced. Instead, schools should teach more useful subjects like problem-solving, game developing, and financial management. That way, students will learn things that will actually help them in the future, which most people believe is why they go to school in the first place.

This article is suggesting that we should replace education with job training. But I just hope people can understand that they are quite different. Job training is for giving someone useful skills. But education makes someone into a completely different kind of person. It’s not so hard to tell if a person is educated, because a few sentences out of their mouth is usually enough. And if students are going to be educated properly, then history is actually the most important subject. Because you know history is not even about the past, rather it’s the background for understanding the situation we are in today.
