Taipei MRT vs. public buses – why the MRT is better | Victor Lu – Grade 9

In modern times in Taipei, transportation systems are well developed, and they extend in all directions. People can travel around the city efficiently and easily.

MRT and buses are both public transportation systems in Taipei, moreover, they are the most popular ones. These public transportation systems both play important roles in the city.

However, considering all aspects, the MRT system is better than buses.

Independent system that is always on time

First, the MRT system has an independent railroad, so traffic will not interfere with its operation. Also, lines are built both above the ground and underground. Cars, buses, scooters share the same roads, but MRTs do not.

Next, the independent system of the MRT enables it to be on time. For example, every MRT station has its own precise standard departure time of every train, and if there are no problems with the system, every train is always on time.

Produces much less pollution and greenhouse effect

In Taipei, all the MRT trains use electricity as energy, but buses use gasoline as their fuel. However, even though people are promoting electric cars and buses, they are not yet popular, so they still use a large amount of gasoline. In fact, when buses operate, they dump many carbon dioxide molecules and other types of toxic gas into the air, therefore, the air will be stinky, boiling, and toxic.

Second, because cars and scooters use gasoline, which is made by fossil fuel, they will dump tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Burning too much fossil fuel dumps more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, but MRT trains do not produce greenhouse gases on their own, so it is less harmful to the environment.

Inspections and safety

Although some MRT trains are more than twenty years old, their cleaning and checking process enables them to look newer. Workers clean them comprehensively, and the cleaners will also spread perfume on these trains.

Next, the engineers routinely check each car in order to make sure that every component and system of every MRT train is alright. Also, the MRT system has a type of special car which maintains and repairs the rails themselves.

Less noisy

Some parts of the MRT are built at ground level and noise problems are serious. To cope with this, when these railroads were built engineers also constructed soundproof walls.

While some highways in Taipei have walls like the MRT, pretty much no city streets do. Therefore, broadly speaking, MRT trains cause less noise pollution than buses.

Certainly, in Taipei, buses can travel to places where there are no nearby MRT stations. Buses bring convenience to the residents who live in places where there are no MRT stations. However, riding the MRT is a better experience than riding the bus. They are more punctual, they cause less pollution, they look newer, receive intricate safety checks, and they are less noisy. To conclude, the MRT is superior to riding the bus.
