Game Review – Minecraft: by Phil Wang – Grade 9

Minecraft is a sandbox game where you can do a lot of things you can’t do in real life, such as build houses, chop down trees with your own hand, and fight zombies or skeletons. It was released on May 17, 2009 on PC with the alpha version and made a commotion with online players, partly because it doesn’t have a goal for you to finish.

Designer Markus Persson (AKA Notch) made this game on accident. He wasn’t trying to make this game and he even thought of not releasing it because he thought square blocks were too simple for players. Just before Notch deleted it, a few workers noticed this game could go on forever, so they advised Notch to develop it. Surprisingly, after the game was published in 2010, it made a lot of money for Notch. This made him very rich so he could make more games in the future.

In Minecraft, you can be a god because there is a “creative mode” where you can have access to unlimited resources, so you can build anything you want. There is also survival mode where you have to start with no resources and slowly become the guy with the most diamonds. If you want to play with your friends, there are Minecraft realms where you can pay every month to have your own server.

Another great thing about Minecraft is that this game is not so expensive. Unlike other expensive games, Minecraft only costs about 1000NTD, which is cheap for most people, so kids can easily get this game and start playing.

The best part of the game is that you can play either single or multiplayer. You can share your buildings with your friends in multiplayer mode. Minecraft realms is a great choice for those who don’t have powerful computers but want to play with friends.

People will say, “I’m bored playing the original maps, are there new ones?” To address this, players started creating their own maps. Most maps are sky blocks, which means you live beside the void. Any little step over the side brings death. Tension, excitement, and a lot of depression will come out of playing these maps.

Today, Minecraft is still a popular game, and it’s getting better and better. Notch never thought it would be so successful. Minecraft generated a huge amount of money for him to create more games for us to play. If you have time to play games, don’t forget to try Minecraft.
