Homeschooling is an education system for students that do not fit into ordinary education systems such as traditional public schools. Homeschooling helps every individual student because the student’s curriculum is custom-made and chosen to fit what the student needs.

Homeschooling is literally what it sounds like: learning at home or having a teacher come to your house to teach you. In the 1970s, homeschooling was often for kids who couldn’t go to normal schools such as mentally or physically disabled kids.

More and more people in Taiwan consider homeschooling to be a smart way for their kids to learn since normal Taiwanese schools pressure their students by testing them constantly. Moreover, homeschooling is better for students since they get to train themselves in time management, and studies have proved that homeschooling improves students’ mental health.

You can choose your own school curriculum

Every student has slightly different likes and interests in subjects so letting students choose their own curriculum would make their learning journey more enjoyable.

Homeschooling can let kids of different ages choose their own curriculum, although students still need to take required courses such as math, English, and Chinese. Therefore, a homeschooler’s day might look something like this:

  • 8am: math class (one hour)
  • A break in between (10-20 mins)
  • 10am: language arts (one and a half hours)
  • 12pm: lunch
  • 3pm: a course on a specific skill that the homeschooler wants to learn (this does not have to be academic subjects)
  • 4-5pm: kids are free from school (end around this time so kids won’t stay up all night studying)

Homeschool is beneficial for training self-control and time management

Parents gradually let their kids gain control of their learning when kids learn to be responsible for their studies. When kids become self-disciplined, they gain real control of their learning schedules.

Once the student learns and discovers what they want to work on in their educational life they start to have a sense of responsibility and direction. After discovering what they want to learn or pursue in their education students don’t mess around and waste time. Instead, homeschooled students actually want to learn and study to fulfill their dreams, so they end up working harder and learning more.

Time to take in information

Unlike normal schools, homeschooling allows every student to learn at their own pace. Also, students don’t need to sit in some classroom for hours with only a short break. This short break may not be enough for some students to process what the teachers have said.

On the other hand, homeschooling can help a student’s learning because it gives the student time to process the information they have encountered. Moreover, having more short breaks and time to take in information also boosts brain function and health, encouraging effective learning.

Not so much pressure

Most homeschoolers don’t even need to take tests until the end of a unit or semester. This big test is to make sure a student is actually learning and absorbing information. Since less tests means less opportunities to waste time on test prep, students would not be pressured constantly to get high grades by their parents. This makes learning more enjoyable and satisfying since the student actually gets to learn.

Homeschoolers also have more opportunities to exercise, improving teen mental and physical health. Exercising can help a teenager sleep better at night since exercising can relieve stress, letting teens sleep peacefully and stress free. Better sleep and less stress will ensure mental stability.

Parents need to stop being lazy and turning a blind eye toward their kid’s education because what schools are doing is breaking and destroying students’ mental health and passion for learning.

Homeschooling not only helps students learn but also improves their mental health, allows more time to absorb information, and encourages flexible learning schedules in which students can balance their lives between their studies and free time. Parents should consider homeschooling their kids. In short, homeschooling changes and improves a student’s learning journey.
