  • 台灣小吃在全世界是獨一無二的
  • 台灣小吃價格便宜
  • 台灣小吃一生必嚐一次

Taiwan not only has a unique geography that can’t be found anywhere else in the world, it also has some delectable street food that you probably have never tried. These delightful, traditional, and inexpensive treats are something you need to check off your bucket list. Here are 5 snacks you must devour if you travel to Taiwan:

5. Luwei (滷味)

Luwei 滷味

Luwei is a huge selection of meat, vegetables, and noodles. You fill your basket with whatever items you choose from the stand, and the staff then braise your food in a massive hotpot. The soup saturates whatever you put in it. It’s normally served dry and you can add as much spice as you want. You can eat luwei any time, but it’s best to eat it in the winter. Luwei is priced according to what items you put in the basket, but it’s never too expensive.

4. Douhua (豆花)

Douhua 豆花

Douhua is a traditional Taiwanese dessert. It’s a kind of soft tofu which is made from soybeans. Douhua is served with brown sugar syrup, and is usually infused with peanuts, tapioca pearls, or red bean. Douhua can be eaten in either summer or winter, because there are hot and cold varieties depending on the season. Douhua costs about 50 NTD, but as you add more sides, it’ll cost more.

3. Shaved ice (剉冰)

Shaved ice 剉冰

Shaved ice is the ultimate summer dessert: it’s refreshing, light, and not as sweet as ice cream is. This dish comes with fresh sliced fruit and served with sweet condiments or syrup. There are lots of sides to choose from, for instance: grass jelly, pudding, or mochi. The price is around 40~100 NTD depending on toppings. One of my favourite shaved ice shops is called 黑岩古早味黑砂糖剉冰 (Black Rock Shaved Ice). If you want to try some shaved ice, it’s the first place to go.

2. Stinky tofu (臭豆腐)

Stinky tofu 臭豆腐

Stinky tofu is notorious for its body odor-like aroma. It is marinated until it ferments, which is why it has such a funky bouquet. The tofu is cut into cubes and deep fried. After frying for a few minutes, the tofu is placed on a dish and served with sour kimchi. The sour cabbage provides a tart pop to contrast with the savory tofu. It’s also nice to serve with some chilies to add more flavor to the tofu. The average price of stinky tofu is between 60~70 NTD. I often go to a stinky tofu shop called 松旺臭豆腐 (Song wang Stinky Tofu), because they have bargain prices. The tofu is crispy, crunchy, and juicy, and while it may smell a little stinky, it tastes amazing.

1. Taiwanese fried chicken (鹹酥雞)

Taiwanese fried chicken 鹹酥雞Taiwanese fried chicken is one of the most beloved dishes in Taiwan. Pieces of chicken are dressed with batter, then fried for a few minutes until the golden, succulent white meat is ready to serve. It is a common street snack that can be found at all night markets in Taiwan. Pepper and minced garlic are the typical condiments, while the basil and chili powder are added according to preference. A bag of fried chicken costs about 50~60 NTD. 繼光香香雞 (J&G Fried Chicken) is the most famous chicken chain shop in Taiwan. The unique sauce from the shop is what makes the fried chicken so special.

There are millions of food articles about Taiwan on the internet (and plenty here at Taipei Teen Tribune with pieces by Lily, Claire, and even myself!). They are so easy to find because these dishes are so appetizing. There are many more foods you should try if you visit Taiwan, but the dishes listed above should definitely be a priority. They are all something to absolutely die for.
