Is Facebook dead? | Stephanie Wang – Grade 9

Facebook has always been the top social media app that is used by every one over the world, until Instagram and other apps’ emerge and popularity. Facebook is used as a tool to connect the whole world together, to let others know us better, to share opinions we’re interested in, and to catch up with old friends.

North America

Facebook is dying in North America. Instagram has taken over Facebook’s popularity in recent years. Youngsters now use Instagram, Snapchat and other social media apps instead. As for Facebook, elderly people are the most common daily active users (DAU).

Facebook has 1.8 billion DAUs compared to Instagram which has 5 billion in North America. It has an estimated 8000 users die everyday. Instagram has definitely crushed Facebook but it doesn’t really matter that much to them because Instagram is owned by Facebook anyway.

The reasons why Facebook has lost ground to other apps are clear. Instagram and Snapchat offer features that disappear in 24 hours which is something different from Facebook. Also your Instagram collage will be filled by the similar type of content you have seen recently which is different from Facebook’s repetitive political advertising.

The other reason why Facebook has been smashed by Instagram in recent years is because youngsters have more options to stay in touch with friends and family. Instead of using Facebook to contact friends from thousands of miles away, people have more choices now. They can not only do it by text messages but keep in touch by seeing people’s stories.

Last but not least, Facebook is visually cluttered compared to Instagram and Snapchat. More and more kids have Facebook accounts, but with all the chaotic and sloppy information spreading all over the website, it could mentally agonize underaged kids, which is something terrifically unhealthy.

Asia

Facebook is rising in certain places in Asia such as India and Southeast Asia. Less developed countries have little knowledge of other social media apps. All they know is Facebook, because it is the biggest, therefore they directly use it as a tool to stay connected to the rest of the world.

In 2013 there were 1.8 billion DAUs in the Asia-Pacific, and in 2018 there are 5.4 billion. Within a short time the amount of DAUs has climbed three times.

The reason Facebook is surging in Southeast Asia is because it is accessible. Southeast Asia is developing, and that means more jobs and more income so it is easier for people to access mobile phones.

Since Facebook is the biggest and the most popular app in the world, plus there were already a few people using Facebook in Southeast Asia, in order to stay connected to their friends and family, more phones means more Facebook users.

People in Southeast Asia are poorer so they would choose Facebook as a tool to trade stuff because it is cheaper. Facebook is not only a massive social media app but also famous for selling things with a bargain price. Loads of people use Facebook as a tool to buy, sell, and trade items because the platform makes it simple.

Facebook is also used as a political and information tool. Facebook expands political ad transparency tools to all the users.

The rest of the world

As for the rest of the world such as Europe and Australia, they have some similar components like North America. The two continents above are both developed, which means people get educated and have knowledge. They play an important role in the world and have a large influence in the world. And for China, it’s a different case because they have a totally disparate system from the rest of the world which is closed by the Chinese government.

Within the next 50 years, Facebook could be more of a dead zone than a living social network. Facebook needs to find solutions to problems they’re currently facing, like an aging and decreasing user base in many parts of the world. They shouldn’t just buy off other companies’ products but instead see what they can do to be the best in the industry they built.
